eCommerce News Weekly Update Vol 32.

This week we prepared five eCommerce news for you to catch up with.

  1. USPS Offers Self-Scanning Services at More Than 2,200 Post Offices

This may help online sellers save time in line and get their packages scanned as quickly as possible. There are currently 2,214 self-service kiosks, most of which are located in post office lobbies that are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The goal of the "kiosk" program is to provide customers with convenient self-service alternatives to full-service counters.

  1. European cross-border transactions expected to reach $156 trillion by 2022, with free shipping a key driver

According to market research firm PYMNTS, mobile commerce will account for an average of $3.1 trillion in annual purchases in cross-border trade in Europe over the next five years, a 70 percent increase compared to 2020 ($2.1 trillion).

The growth in cross-border mobile commerce purchases is reportedly driven by rising smartphone adoption. Currently, 83% of adults own a cell phone and use it to purchase a wide variety of items.

We have learned that European consumers will make cross-border online purchases for the following reasons: 1. free delivery services for goods; 2. more convenience and a wider variety of items; 3. mobile payment methods are increasing.

  1. Port of Los Angeles pressures ocean carriers to remove stranded empty containers more quickly

FreightWaves reports that the Port of Los Angeles plans to begin charging ocean carriers a fee to allow empty containers to remain at the port's marine terminals for nine days or longer. The fee, which is subject to approval by the Los Angeles Port Commission, will take effect on Jan. 30, 2022.

The Port of Los Angeles Commission will consider the plan at the Jan. 13 board meeting. Any fees collected from residential shipments will be reinvested in programs designed to improve efficiency, speed up shipments and address the impact of congestion.
